Shrine Auction Update

Oaxacalogo_lg

I am happy to update everyone on Rebecca's Shrine Auction that is previewing this week on her blog.

From her website she describes the auction eloquently: "This site was created to host an annual art auction benefiting Oaxaca Streetchildren Grassroots, a project endeavoring to support the needs of a predominately indigenous population. These children are the ones diligently selling small handmade crafts, roses and dulces on the zocalo for long hours hoping to save enough money to finally attend school. This is a hand-to-mouth culture and the effort of saving up the required cost of uniforms, books, and supplies keeps most from ever achieving this longed-for goal.

Oaxaca Streetchildren Grassroots is dedicated to providing a multilayered approach to assist children and their families in skills that insure their own independence and success.

Thanks for visiting our shrine gallery. One hundred percent of the funds generated in the upcoming auction will go directly to Oaxaca Streetchildren Grassroots."

The preview is now through Friday April 16 and the Auction will go live beginning Saturday April 17 and run for a week. Be sure to visit and have a look at all the great shrines that will be available for the auction.

My shrine, "Danza del Corazon" (Dance of the Heart) is a nod to Dia de Los Muertos and is filled, for me, with memories of my time in Oaxaca and a workshop I took there several years ago. The street children touched me deeply and I am very honored to participate inthis fund raiser and support an organization like Oaxaca Streetchildrenn Grassroots that helps educate these kids.

My shrine sings with the blue of the Oaxacan sky and the celebration of Day of The Dead. The gold marigolds remind us of the sun's brilliance and a universe of love. The pink roses, also a symbol of love, dance around the deep red heart of Guadalupe's divinely feminine presence. The Katrina inspired skeleton dances to life's rhythm everlasting – her blue dancing shoes have danced across many a stage in this life and the next.

I used an old stationery box that had a glass front. It's hard to photograph without a lot of glare, but it looks so much like the little Dia de Los Muertos boxes that I collect for Day of the Dead, that I am really happy with the way it turned out.

I hope you will visit this Auction website this week and considering bidding on one of these beautiful shrines.
